Construction is underway in Eden on a $23 million project to expand Gildan Activewear's distribution hub from about 977,000 square feet to nearly 1.2 million square feet by mid-2015.

Gildan officials confirmed that Pilot Mountain-based Omega Construction has begun work on the facility expansion at 602 East Meadow Road. The project will add 16 to the company's current Eden work force of 310 full-time employees.

Omega Construction Inc. will demolish the former Hanesbrands plant on South Stratford Road in Winston-Salem to make way for a large-scale mixed-used development on the property.

Demolition should start this December and wrap up by spring, said Barry Hennings, president of Omega Construction. The contractor will demolish nine buildings spanning 526,483 square feet as well as existing paving and utilities on the 26-acre property.
